Leading Medical Retina Center in Italy Adopts Eyenuk's EyeArt AI Eye Screening System

On January 17, 2020, Dr. Donatella Musetti of the Medical Retina Center at the University Eye Clinic of Genoa presented strong EyeArt results on first 712 patients at the Macula in Liguria 2020 Conference. The University Eye Clinic of Genoa is directed by Professor C.E. Traverso and is one of Italy's major cultural and scientific institutions in the Mediterranean and Northwestern Region. WASHINGTON: Taking science to the next level, researchers have found that an automated artificial intelligence (AI) screening system is now capable of accurately discovering diabetic retinopathy 95.5 per cent of the time. Moreover, the system doesn't require inputs from an expert ophthalmologist and it can provide a reading in just 60 seconds. Researchers presented these findings at AAO 2019, the 123rd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Diabetic retinopathy can develop over time in people with diabetes, especially when they have poor control over their blood sugar levels. High blood sugar can damage tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye.

Italy Deployed Eyenuk's EyeArt AI Eye Screening System for First National Retinal and Diabetic Maculopathy Prevention and Diagnosis Campaign

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Eyenuk Inc., a global artificial intelligence (AI) medical technology and services company and the leader in real-world applications for AI Eye Screening, announced today that the EyeArt AI Eye Screening System was deployed successfully for Italy's first national prevention and diagnosis campaign for retinal and diabetic maculopathy. A total of 2,200 patients were screened at 30 centers across Italy, with more than half chosen for EyeArt AI Eye Screening. The Month of Prevention of Diabetic Retinopathy and Maculopathy was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Health, the city of Milan and the Italian Ophthalmology Society in collaboration with the Ambrosian Ophthalmic Center (CAMO), San Raffaele Hospital and Eyenuk. In Italy, an estimated 3.2 million patients have diabetes. As many as 25% are estimated to be affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR),1 the main cause of vision impairment and blindness among working-age adults.

EyeArt is an artificial intelligence system that has been developed and tested to help bridge the gap in screening for diabetic retinopathy. As the numbers of people with diabetes continue to grow, there aren't enough ophthalmologists and other health care providers to adequately screen for diabetic eye disease. Chair, Professor of Ophthalmology, and Director of Retina Service at the University of Illinois at Chicago presented the results of a clinical trial of the EyeArt system at the 2019 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Imaging in the Eye Conference in Vancouver, BC. Lim told MD Magazine that the EyeArt system has a "great ability to be useful to detect referable DR [diabetic retinopathy] from non-referable DR and what that really means in the practical sense is that the EyeArt system and this artificial intelligence system is useful in order to help triage patients and screen for diabetic retinopathy." She added that her hope that EyeArt will contribute to reducing blindness in this population in the future.
